Photos from year one.

A lot of litter seams to accumulate here. I cleaned up a lot 3 weeks ago and there is already quite a bit that has accumulated. I want to make twice weekly passes along here in the future to keep this area nice.
Here is another photo of the litter accumulating opposite the new murals. I cleaned it up 3 weeks ago and I am definitely thinking that it wouldn't hurt for a twice weekly clean-up. Plus, you get to enjoy the murals when you do.
This is after the cleanup behind the north section of Minnehaha mall.
This is behind target before cleanup. This area would benefit from a twice weekly cleanup as well.

This is a picture of a syringe needle laying on the street that is a biohazard for children and adults alike that I pick up in the following video. I come across many discarded syringe needles doing litter pickup and in fact I picked up a total of 4 this morning. Three at another bus stop LLFNA has adopted. While a grabber tool isn't as efficient in many ways for cleaning up litter on pavement as a broom and dustpan, it can be used for proper collection of syringe needles. Do not attempt to pick up needles without being properly prepared. They are a biohazard! There is risk of contracting Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV from them. Longfellow Litter Free Neighborhood accepts no responsibility for anybody picking up syringe needles!
Things to note in this video of me picking up a discarded needle:
I am wearing gloves, but I don't actually touch the needle.
I get a firm grip on the needle with the grabber before moving it closer to me.
I insert the needle pointy side down into the transportable sharp's container.
I do this by myself to have better control over the situation.
NOTE: Litter grabbers need to be disinfected with bleach spray at the end of the day!
The before picture on 12/28/2025 in the morning before the stores are open. Even though it looks pretty clean ( for this is the fourth day in a row I have cleaned this parking lot) I spent an hour and five minutes cleaning it this morning collecting 3 five gallon buckets full of litter. The warmer weather and snow melt made it possible for me to do a more thorough cleanup.
This is the after cleanup picture on the morning of 12/28/2025
Here are some photos of plastic bottles getting ready to be washed down storm drains and into the Mississipi River in the winter on 12/28/2025. With warmer temperatures and a lot of snow melt it is possible to do more litter picking up. This is something that I hope to do more of in the coming winters to help prevent plastic garbage from getting into our waterways.
Here you see two five gallon buckets to be used by the wagon puller (team lead). One bucket is for recycling and compostable items. The other bucket is for plastic and general household garbage. Above the five gallon bucket is the sharps container for the team leader to use. On the right side of the wagon are hooks for the volunteers to hang a water bottle on so please bring a water bottle so that you can stay hydrated.
The 2 gallon white bucket on the left holds a container to sweep broken glass into along with some extra dog poop bags and some hand sanitizer. Then there is the compost container for food scraps. Then there is the hand broom and dustpan for cleaning up glass. Then there is a metal spoon to use to scoop food items found into the white compost bin. Then on the right is a dog poop bag dispenser. The blue 23-gallon container is for glass, clean cardboard, cloth that will be washed, and aluminum. along with vapes and solid scrap metal items to be sent to hazardous waste and scrap metal recycling. The green 23-gallon compost container is for paper products with the bpi logo on them and paper items that can go into the organics bin in Minneapolis. The black 23-gallon container is for plastic items or mixed plastic items that are not electronics.
