Safety Guidelines
-All volunteers must wear the provided customized safety vests.
-Volunteers should wear provided gloves.
-Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes.
-Volunteers should walk on the left side of the street moving towards oncoming traffic.
-Volunteers need to stay properly hydrated. A hook is provided on the wagon to hang a water bottle during clean-ups. Volunteers are responsible for bringing a water bottle that can hang on the hooks.
-Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing for the weather. This would include wearing raingear when raining and wearing sunscreen when hot and sunny.
-Sharps and broken glass should be reported to the team lead (Rogan Quinn) to clean up.
-Other biohazards like blood and human feces should be left untouched and reported to the team lead (Rogan Quinn) so that he can notify the proper parties to clean up.
-Chemicals should also not be touched and reported to the team lead (Rogan Quinn)
General Guidelines
-The general guidelines for the methods of this year's environmentally friendly litter clean-up events are as follows.
***Plastic and foam products should have the majority of food removed and then be placed into the trash. ***
***Paper products that are not compostable should be thrown into the trash ***
*** Paper and cardboard products that are the natural brown color without ink or plastic stickers on them, or if they have a BPI logo on them, or are acceptable under the city of Minneapolis's organics guidelines should be placed into the compost bin. ***
*** Dirty Cardboard with tape or staples that are too hard to remove should be placed into the trash. ***
*** Dirty cardboard that Minneapolis excepts in the organics cart (cardboard without plastic tape or staples, or pizza boxes) should be placed into the green compost bin. ***
*** Clean cardboard should be placed into the blue recycling bin. ***
*** Food scraps (apple cores, banana peels, etc..., or food scraps emptied from containers) should be placed into the compost container on the back of the wagon. ***
NOTE: Liquids should also be emptied from all containers.
***Cloth that has mold or mildew on in should be placed into the trash. ***
NOTE: Cloth that has hazardous waste on it should be left alone and reported to the team lead (Rogan)
*** Leather gloves and shoes should be placed into the trash. ***
*** Cloth that is free from mold, mildew and hazardous waste should be put in the blue recycling bin to be later sorted, washed and donated by the team lead (Rogan). ***
*** Gently used and relatively clean handbags and wallets in good condition should be placed in blue recycling bin to later be sorted out by the team leader and donated. ***
NOTE: If valuables are found such as money in a wallet with an ID or credit cards hand it over to the team leader to take care of. If money is found that has no identification linked with it is yours to keep.
*** Broken glass should be swept up by the team lead and placed into a plastic container stored in the white bucket at the back of the wagon. ***
***Glass products should be emptied of any liquid and then placed into blue recycling bin.***
***Products with mixed metal and plastic that are not electronics should be placed into the trash. ***
*** Aluminum cans and other scrap metal should be placed into blue recycling bin. ***
***Discarded vapes found need to be kept separate in the 2-gallon white bucket on back of wagon. ***
*** Needles need to be left alone and reported to the team lead (Rogan) to collect. ***
CAUTION! -Needles are dangerous to handle and should only be handled by the team lead. It is not just getting poked, it is also the risk of getting bloodborne pathogens such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV.
***Pet feces are to be picked up using a bag from the dispenser on the wagon and placed into the trash. ***
NOTE: Make sure and use hand sanitizer after picking up dog poop. It is in the 2-gallon white bucket at the back of the wagon.
***Any Human feces or soiled toilet paper should be left alone and reported to the team lead (Rogan) to then report to the city coordinator or if on a business property to the business to clean up. ***
***Electronics and large items that aren't household garbage need to be left alone and reported to the team lead (Rogan) to report to the city coordinator. ***
Loaner Kit Information
What is provided:
-A customized safety vest with a name tag will be provided.
-A litter grabber will be provided.
-Two five-gallon buckets will be provided. One for trash and the other one for compostables and recyclables.
-A pair of gloves will be provided
What is not provided:
-Sunscreen or raingear is not provided.
-A water bottle is not provided.
Disposal Instructions
-Litter collected will be gathered up and placed at the address of the business for collection, which is 2824 S 31st Ave. Parking space number 1 is for business operations.
-If trash becomes full on the wagon, the bags of trash can be placed by the city garbage receptacles on Lake Street if that is closer than taking it to 2824 S 31st. Ave.
-The amount of litter collected will be recorded on the events page under each clean-up.
